Most widely used in Europe. EN 10083 (alloy steels), EN 10088 (stainless), EN 573 (aluminium), EN 1561/1563 (cast iron).
DIN
Deutsches Institut für Normung
Germany
German standard body. Many DIN designations remain in use alongside EN. e.g. DIN CK45, DIN 1.4301.
AISI/SAE
American Iron and Steel Institute / Society of Automotive Engineers
USA
US designation system. Widely used worldwide (4140, 304, D2). SAE system for steels uses 4-digit code.
ASTM
American Society for Testing and Materials
USA
US material and testing standards. A-series for ferrous, B-series for non-ferrous. Specify both grade and product form.
JIS
Japanese Industrial Standards
Japan
Japanese standard body. JIS G-series for iron and steel, JIS H-series for non-ferrous metals. e.g. SCM440, SUS304, FC250.
GOST
Russian Federal Agency on Technical Regulating
Russia / CIS
Russian/Soviet standard system. Alphanumeric designation in Cyrillic. e.g. 40XM (40CrMo), 08X18H10 (08Cr18Ni10).
BS EN
British Standards Institution
United Kingdom
UK adopts European EN standards as BS EN. Legacy BS designations (e.g. 817M40) being phased out.
NF
Association Française de Normalisation (AFNOR)

French standard body. Legacy designations (Z6CN18-09, 42CD4) largely replaced by EN.

Unified Numbering System
USA
US cross-reference system coordinated by ASTM/SAE. Uses letter + 5 digits. K=alloy steels, S=stainless, A=aluminium. e.g. S30400 (304 SS), G41400 (4140 steel).

China
Chinese national standard body. Steel designations similar to ISO/DIN. e.g. Q235B (S235), 40Cr (41Cr4), 06Cr19Ni10 (304).

Jugoslovenski Standard
Yugoslavia / Ex-YU
Yugoslav standard system, used in ex-YU countries (BiH, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia). Designation: Č.XXXX (carbon/alloy steels), Siv. (grey iron), Kug. (ductile iron).

JUS — Yugoslav Standard

JUS (Jugoslovenski standard) was the technical standard system used in the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, and continued to be applied in successor states (BiH, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Macedonia, Montenegro) until full harmonisation with EN standards.

In BiH, JUS standards were gradually replaced by BAS EN (Bosansko-hercegovački standard European Norm) standards, but JUS designations are still found in older technical documentation, drawings and contracts.

Delivery condition codes used in EN/DIN standards and material designations.

+N Normalized / Normalgeglüht Air-cooled from austenitising temperature. Grain refinement.
+QT Quenched + Tempered / Vergütet Oil or water quenched then tempered. High strength + toughness.
+AT Solution Annealed / Lösungsgeglüht Used for austenitic stainless and aluminium alloys. Full dissolution of precipitates.
+C Cold Drawn / Kaltgezogen Cold-drawn bar. Higher strength and surface quality than hot-rolled.
+CR Cold Rolled / Kaltgewalzt Cold-rolled sheet/strip. Tight tolerances, good surface.
+AR As Rolled / Im Walzzustand No heat treatment after rolling. Structural steels.
+P Precipitation Hardened Solution treated + artificially aged. For PH stainless.
+SR Stress Relieved / Spannungsarm Low-temperature heat treatment to relieve residual stresses without changing properties.
T3 Solution + Cold Work + Natural Age For aluminium alloys (2xxx series). Cold work after solution treatment.
T4 Solution + Natural Aged For aluminium alloys. Natural ageing at room temperature.
T5 Partial Solution + Artificial Age Direct quench from extrusion die, then artificial ageing.
T6 Solution + Artificial Aged (Peak) Standard temper for high-strength aluminium (6xxx, 7xxx). Maximum strength.
T73 Solution + Over-Aged 7xxx aluminium. Lower strength vs T6, excellent SCC resistance.
T651 T6 + Stretch Relieved T6 properties + low residual stress. For machined thick plate.
H32 Strain Hardened + Stabilised Non-heat-treatable Al-Mg alloys. 1/4 hard + stabilise.
H111 Strain Hardened — Slightly Slight work hardening only. Marine grade 5083 etc.
H116 Strain Hardened — Marine Temper Stabilised 5xxx alloys for immersed marine service.
O Annealed (full softening) Maximum ductility. Used for aluminium and copper.
SH Surface Hardened Induction or flame hardened surface.
CH Case Hardened Carburised + quenched case with tough core.
GH Elevated Temperature Service Suffix for pressure vessel steels (P265GH, 16Mo3). G=Druckbehälter, H=warm.
QL Quenched + Tempered (Low Temp. Impact) Structural steels (S690QL). Q=Q+T, L=impact at −40°C.
